Whatever was I to make of his claims? I didn’t know enough about the workings of the grid to say whether the Prince’s scheme was possible. I hoped Astar would be drawn in by my curiosity—she is more analytical than I—but no such luck. Perhaps later she might pay me a visit, I thought—after I’d spent more time observing Caligastia putting his reincarnational plans into action.

The more I thought about the possible consequences of the changes he was plotting to impose on the grid, the more I realized the brilliance of the move—if he could actually make it happen. It would ensure his dominance and omnipotence in a way in which he had always dreamed. Mostly it would confirm for him his claim of being the God of this World.

Whether the other rebel Princes would be quite so admiring, I rather doubted. Even if they copied his system—I had already come to think of it as the “Reincarnation Express”—they certainly wouldn’t want Caligastia as their leader! And their leader of what? Was he really going to attempt to freeze Lucifer and Satan out of their prominent positions in the revolution?

This seemed most unlikely to me, but, if nothing else, the encounter with Prince Caligastia exposed me to some of the rifts I’d heard were starting to appear among the higher echelons of the revolutionary junta. Yet what shocked me most deeply as I pondered what I’d heard was the Prince’s proposed betrayal of the most fundamental principle of our revolution.

If I understood what he meant, he was intending to trap mortal souls in an endless cycle of human lifetimes—depriving them of their right to ascension. This would ensure that—while in mortal form—the soul would come to owe its allegiance and its progressive servitude to a false divinity of Caligastia’s fabrication.

What’s more, knowing how the Prince worked, I had no doubt he was going to promote reincarnation as an accepted belief system among some groups. For other belief systems, he would implant a denial of previous lifetimes, thus ensuring that reincarnation would become a bone of contention between different religions. He never could resist the malicious pleasure he derived from his compulsive need to divide and conquer!

Yet beneath the Prince’s maneuvering was the undeniable fact of the imposition of his autocratic will on those for whom he had originally arrived to uplift and free from the dominance of their animal natures. Now he was planning to ensnare those souls and condition them over lifetimes of subservience to serving his will. He didn’t really care what mortals would call him. If he was able to accomplish his plans—whether he would be worshipped as a trinity by some or a singular divinity by others—he was determined to establish himself, once and for all, as the highest god.

This was such a blatant abuse of every principle of personal freedom and self-determination we stood for when we had turned our backs on the MA’s rigid theocracy. I couldn’t believe he was going to be permitted to get away with it.
